Inclusive practice for people with intellectual disability
This recorded webinar, presented by Inclusion Australia policy officers Brooke Canham and Luke Nelson, unpacks what intellectual disability is, why having a job matters, what inclusive practice involves and why it’s essential.
This session shares practical, lived‑experience insights to support more inclusive and accessible employment opportunities for people with an intellectual disability. The session explains that inclusive practice is essential to removing barriers to employment. By shifting attitudes, improving accessibility, and embedding inclusion into everyday work practices, organisations can unlock the potential of people with an intellectual disability and create more equitable workplaces.
What is inclusive practice?
Intellectual disability is a lifelong condition that affects a person’s intellectual skills and their behaviour in different situations. Inclusive practice is defined as:
- A way of working where everyone is valued, respected, and able to contribute equally
- A focus on identifying and removing barriers associated with intellectual disabilities
- A mindset, not a checklist
- An ongoing commitment requiring learning and reflection
Key principles for inclusion
The session highlights practical ideas for more inclusive workplaces:
- Use accessible communication (e.g. Easy Read, plain English) so people can understand information and make decisions
- Be aware of power dynamics and build trust (e.g. language, behaviour, environment)
- Allow extra time, flexibility, and support when needed
- Avoid assumptions and give people a fair opportunity
About the “Towards Inclusive Practice” project
The presentation also introduces a broader initiative that provides:
- Guides, fact sheets, tip sheets, and videos
- Advice for governments and organisations on inclusive approaches
These resources aim to support systemic change toward more inclusive workplaces.
