The real face of men's health: 2024 Australian report

Our summary

This report provides a comprehensive picture of men’s health in Australia by combining national data with lived experiences from over 1,600 men, revealing that many face significant barriers to maintaining their health.

Barriers include:

  • stigma;
  • gender stereotypes;
  • low health literacy; and
  • negative healthcare experiences.

It highlights critical issues such as high rates of premature death, suicide as a leading cause of death among younger men, and widening inequalities for groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and those in rural areas. The report emphasises that these outcomes are largely preventable but require systemic change — calling for more accessible, culturally and gender-responsive healthcare, improved health literacy, and targeted policy investment — and underscores that improving men’s health has broad benefits for families, communities, and the economy.
