First-Ever Queer Legal Service Launched in the NT

In February 2026, the Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) officially launched the Northern Territory’s first specialised Queer Legal Service — a free and dedicated legal support service for LGBTQIASB+ people throughout the Territory. LGBTQIASB+ people often face barriers in accessing legal support due to cost, fear of judgement, or lack of specialised services.

The new service was created in response to a clear gap in culturally safe, inclusive legal assistance for issues uniquely experienced by LGBTQIASB+ communities, such as:

  • discrimination on the basis of a person's LGBTQIASB+ identity;
  • family and domestic violence, including domestic and personal violence restraining orders;
  • access to health, education, and other services;
  • name or gender-marker changes;
  • family law issues connected to a person's LGBTQIASB+ identity;
  • housing issues;
  • expungement of historical convictions for homosexual activity.

The Queer Legal Service is staffed by LGBTQIASB+ lawyers and allies. They are able to provide non-judgmental legal advice, legal education, and referrals, tailored specifically to the queer community’s needs. The launch marks a significant milestone for LGBTQIASB+ rights and legal access in the NT, reflecting broader efforts to improve equitable access to justice for marginalised communities in the Territory.
