AIATSIS code of ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research

Description

The AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research provides a framework to ensure research involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia is conducted ethically, responsibly, and in partnership with Indigenous communities.

Grounded in the rights of Indigenous peoples (including self-determination and cultural authority), it outlines four core principles which guide researchers, institutions, and funders. These are:

  • Indigenous self-determination
  • Indigenous leadership
  • Impact and value
  • Sustainability and accountability

The Code emphasises that Indigenous peoples must be actively involved in all stages of research that affects them, with control over their knowledge, culture, and data, and that research should deliver tangible, long-term benefits while building trust, accountability, and community capacity.
