The voice of Queenslanders with disability
Our summary
This report captures the lived experiences of people with disability, their families, carers and disability organisations across Queensland. It measures progress against the seven outcome areas of Queensland's Disability Plan 2022–2027: Together, a Better Queensland. It aims to identify what is improving, what remains challenging and where policy action is needed.
The findings reveal a mixed picture. While some respondents reported improvements in access to disability supports, healthcare and community participation, many continue to experience significant barriers in everyday life. Employment opportunities, affordable and accessible housing, cost of living pressures, transport accessibility and financial security remain major concerns. Many participants also reported ongoing experiences of discrimination, exclusion and inaccessible services, limiting their ability to participate fully in education, work and community life.
The report emphasises that disability inclusion requires more than individual supports. Participants highlighted the importance of accessible infrastructure, inclusive workplaces, responsive government services, meaningful consultation and stronger community awareness. People with disability consistently expressed a desire to be involved in decisions that affect their lives, reinforcing the principle of "nothing about us without us."
The report concludes that although progress has been made, significant systemic barriers remain. It calls on governments, service providers, employers and community organisations to strengthen collaboration, improve accessibility, address social and economic inequalities, and ensure the voices of people with disability continue to shape policy and service delivery.
